<sec id="st1">
<title>Background</title>
<p>The exposure of children to digital media is growing rapidly in most low- and middle-income countries, yet scarce data are available on the impact of family processes on children&#x2019;s digital self-regulation (DSR) and psychosocial well-being in these settings.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="st2">
<title>Aim</title>
<p>This study has examined the interaction between digital parenting and family emotional communication (FEC) on children, mediated by DSR and moderated by authoritative parenting and social media exposure (SME).</p>
</sec>
<sec id="st3">
<title>Setting</title>
<p>It was carried out in urban Indonesia and based on data collected from 483 parent&#x2013;child dyads.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="st4">
<title>Methods</title>
<p>We used partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) to estimate the data and test the hypothesised relationships between variables.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="st5">
<title>Results</title>
<p>Digital parenting practices and FEC were positively correlated with children&#x2019;s DSR, which, in turn, was positively correlated with children&#x2019;s psychosocial well-being (CPW). There were positive protective relationships between digital parenting and DSR and negative protective relationships between high SME and parenting styles. Digital self-regulation and psychosocial well-being were explained by the model at 70.5&#x0025; and 76.7&#x0025;, respectively.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="st6">
<title>Conclusion</title>
<p>These findings show the importance of relationships, autonomy-supportive online parenthood and positive, loving communication in establishing CPW.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="st7">
<title>Contribution</title>
<p>This research contributes to childhood education scholarship by demonstrating how family-mediated DSR and emotional communication underpin children&#x2019;s socioemotional readiness, peer adjustment and classroom resilience. The findings provide an evidence-based foundation for integrating relational digital guidance into primary school curricula and structured parent-teacher collaboration frameworks in the Global South.</p>

<title>Introduction</title>
<p>Children in urban Southeast Asia are being raised in digital environments as never before. In Indonesia, a country of more than 270 million people, smartphone penetration exceeds 75&#x0025;. Social media use among children starts at 8 years old (Syukur et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0042">2024</xref>). By the time they reach 10, even more than 90&#x0025; of children living in one of the major cities like Jakarta, Bandung and Surabaya actively use short-form video platforms such as TikTok and Instagram reels, sometimes for more than 2 h per day (Kakon et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0023">2024</xref>). While these platforms may present opportunities for learning, exploring their identities and connecting with peers, they also cause serious psychosocial risks, such as anxiety, sleep disturbance, body image issues and loss of self-worth, especially when their exposure is intensive, unrestricted and algorithm-driven (Lisztwan Honusov&#x00E1;, Dedkova &#x0026; M&#x00FD;lek <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0028">2026</xref>; Meier &#x0026; Reinecke <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0031">2020</xref>; Prime, Wade &#x0026; Browne <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0033">2020</xref>). From a developmental perspective, these digital environments have become central contexts in which children&#x2019;s socioemotional skills and self-regulatory capacities are shaped in everyday life (Augustine &#x0026; Stifter <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0003">2019</xref>; Odgers et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0032">2022</xref>; Valkenburg <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0045">2021</xref>).</p>
<p>Families are the primary mediators of children&#x2019;s use of digital media. However, the mechanisms by which parental practices influence positive future child outcomes in non-Western settings remain under-theorised (Fitriani &#x0026; Sari <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0013">2023</xref>). Much of the extant literature conceptualises &#x2018;digital parenting&#x2019; as an assortment of concrete, technical behaviours (e.g., monitoring screen time, cracking down on apps and content) huddled within a cluster of other emotions and relationships in the home (Adawiah &#x0026; Rachmawati <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0001">2021</xref>). This techno-managerial framing represents a broader trend in child media research that focuses on risk management rather than on building relationships to understand children&#x2019;s development, often overlooking the scaffolding processes that enable children to develop internalised regulatory capacities in the digital domain (Barr et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0004">2024</xref>; Fam et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0010">2025</xref>).</p>
<p>Recent scholarship argues for a paradigm shift towards emotionally responsive, autonomy-supportive ways of thinking, feeling and doing, combining active dialogue, warm communication, collaborative boundary-making and co-regulation of online experiences (Barr et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0004">2024</xref>; Pyne, Asmara &#x0026; Morawska <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0034">2025</xref>). This reconceptualisation is consistent with developmental theories that view the family as the primary context for the acquisition of self-regulatory skills (Thompson <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0043">2014</xref>; Usher et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0044">2023</xref>). Recent research in applied developmental psychology has emphasised that parenting styles (PS) determine the self-regulation and adaptation of children in daily emotion, socialisation and co-regulation (Cook, Yan &#x0026; Butler <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0007">2024</xref>; Gao et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0014">2024</xref>; George et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0015">2024</xref>). These results imply that digital parenting could be particularly significant for children&#x2019;s digital self-regulation (DSR) or their ability to control their behaviour and emotions in their interactions with online media and technologies.</p>
<p>Central to this reframing is DSR, a two-dimensional phenomenon comprising: (1) behavioural regulation of screen time and content choices; and (2) emotional regulation in response to online stressors such as peer comparison, cyber-victimisation or algorithmic intensity (Fasihi &#x0026; Rostami <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0011">2023</xref>; Rega, Gioia &#x0026; Boursier <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0037">2023</xref>). Digital self-regulation is not natural to the child but rather a scaffolded competence developed through warm interactions in a structured environment between parents and their child (Akel <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0002">2025</xref>; McNaughton et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0030">2022</xref>). Crucially, the efficacy of these interactions may be moderated by PS (Kong &#x0026; Yasmin <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0025">2022</xref>; Ren &#x0026; Zhu <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0038">2022</xref>). Authoritative parenting (characterised by warmth, clear expectations and support for autonomy) fosters a developmental context in which digital guidance is embraced rather than thwarted (Hamid et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0019">2025</xref>; Kapoor et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0024">2024</xref>). In contrast, such well-intentioned digital parenting behaviours and actions may weaken in authoritarian and permissive parenting climates, where either control or indulgence compromises children&#x2019;s sense of agency and self-efficacy (Shohibul et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0041">2025</xref>).</p>
<p>Furthermore, the protective behaviour of family processes may be limited by structural factors, specifically the strength of social media&#x2019;s exposure (Doornwaard et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0009">2025</xref>). In the case of high-exposure digital ecologies, typical of Southeast Asian megacities, algorithmic design, 24/7 connectivity and peer pressure may be too much to resist, even with the best parenting efforts, underscoring the limits of individual-level interventions (Meier &#x0026; Reinecke <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0031">2020</xref>). This tension between family agency and structural constraints seems particularly salient in middle childhood (9&#x2013;12 years of age), when children are in the process of establishing autonomy, increasing independence while remaining dependent and having the caregiver&#x2019;s wishes scaffold their development (Barreto-Zarza, Manuel &#x0026; Miguel <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0005">2021</xref>).</p>
<p>Given that middle childhood coincides with critical years of formal schooling, the DSR capacities shaped at home directly influence children&#x2019;s classroom engagement, peer dynamics and readiness for technology-integrated learning. Yet, educational frameworks often overlook how family-mediated digital practices scaffold these foundational competencies, leaving schools ill-equipped to address the socioemotional challenges children bring into the classroom. Strengthening the home&#x2013;school continuum around digital emotional guidance is therefore essential for fostering adaptive learning environments</p>
<p>To address these theoretical gaps, particularly the lack of contextually grounded models of digital parenting in collectivist, rapidly digitalising settings, the present study asks:</p>
<disp-quote>
<p><italic>RQ: What is the best integrated model of digital parenting, family emotional communication, and parenting style that can best predict children&#x2019;s psychosocial well-being through digital self-regulation among 9-12-year-old social media users in urban Southeast Asia?</italic></p>
</disp-quote>
<p>Grounded in Family Systems Theory (Cox &#x0026; Paley <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0008">1997</xref>), which posits that children&#x2019;s outcomes are a function of dynamic family interactions, and Self-Determination Theory (Ryan &#x0026; Deci <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0039">2000</xref>), which emphasises autonomy, competence and relatedness as fundamental psychological needs, we tested a moderated mediation model:</p>
<list list-type="bullet">
<list-item><p>Digital parenting practices (DPP) and family emotional communication (FEC) &#x2192; enhance DSR &#x2192; which improves psychosocial well-being.</p></list-item>
<list-item><p>Authoritative parenting strengthens the association between family digital guidance and children&#x2019;s self-regulatory behaviours.</p></list-item>
<list-item><p>High social media exposure (SME) diminishes the protective effect of family-mediated regulatory processes.</p></list-item>
<list-item><p>Although the importance of techno-managerial control has taken centre stage in the West, the literature has not focused much on the critical gap in the transition towards scaffolded autonomy in the Global South, which this study explores. In particular, we explore how the concepts of digital parenting and FEC are relevant to middle childhood, a stage that influences DSR and is often overlooked in the literature in favour of the adolescent stage. The validation of this model in urban Indonesia provides a much-needed empirical basis for designing family and school-centred interventions that foster healthy digital habits and socioemotional well-being.</p></list-item>
</list>
<sec id="s20002">
<title>Hypothesis development</title>
<p>Considering the history of prioritising restriction and surveillance (Adawiah &#x0026; Rachmawati <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0001">2021</xref>). The discourse of digital parenting has shifted towards relational and autonomy-supportive parenting modalities that foster values as internalised rather than through compliance (Jung &#x0026; Choi <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0022">2020</xref>; Pyne et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0034">2025</xref>). It is hypothesised that self-regulation development is more efficiently achieved in an autonomy-supportive environment and through active mediation and less so in a coercive environment (Ryan &#x0026; Deci <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0039">2000</xref>; Syukur et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0042">2024</xref>). Consequently, we postulate that DPP consistently predict children&#x2019;s DSR (H1).</p>
<p>Family emotional communication complements such parenting skills and is a significant protective factor in such situations, as it promotes emotional socialisation and provides children with the vocabulary to deal with online stressors, such as cyber-victimisation (Ferreira et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0012">2024</xref>; Ratliff et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0036">2023</xref>). The empirical support of the proactive use of emotional dialogue to improve behavioural regulation and adjustment of children in collectivist contexts has been established by empirical findings, and the hypothesis has also been validated (Kapoor et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0024">2024</xref>; Shaw et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0040">2020</xref>), which implies a positive correlation between FECs and DSR in children (H2).</p>
<p>The key element of this family process model is DSR, a scaffolded competence formed through positive parent&#x2013;child interactions and serving as the key lever connecting external contributions of parenting to internal child outcomes (Hamid et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0019">2025</xref>; Syukur et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0042">2024</xref>). Adaptive coping (Kurt <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0026">2023</xref>), which, in turn, has a positive impact on psychosocial outcomes (in terms of mood and peer relationships) (Rega et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0037">2023</xref>; Zhang <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0048">2023</xref>), positively influences the DSR, and the parenting practices and the FEC model positively affect the DSR. Therefore, we posit that DSR is positively associated with children&#x2019;s psychosocial well-being (CPW) (H3) and acts as a mediator in the relationships between DPP (H6) and FEC (H7) with CPW.</p>
<p>Parenting style is an important moderator that puts these relationships into context; it shapes the emotional climates in which certain practices are implemented (Baumrind <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0006">1991</xref>). Authoritative PS facilitates the regulation of behaviour, internalisation and active mediation development (Hamid et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0019">2025</xref>; Pyne et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0034">2025</xref>), but authoritarian or permissive PSs might not (Lo et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0029">2025</xref>). Therefore, it is predicted that PS would moderate the connection between digital parenting and DSR (H4a) and between FEC and DSR (H4b), with a greater positive relationship under authoritative parenting.</p>
<p>Lastly, one of the contextual stressors is SME, and the high intensity of algorithms, along with social comparison, tends to overwhelm a child&#x2019;s regulatory abilities, harming their well-being (Prime et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0033">2020</xref>; Rahamathulla <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0035">2021</xref>). Our counterintuitive assumption is that the structural disadvantage of overexposure harms CPW (H8) and that there is a moderating relationship between authoritative parenting and DSR, with the protective influence of authoritative parenting decreasing with greater exposure to social media (H5).</p>
</sec>
</sec>
<sec id="s0003">
<title>Research methods and design</title>
<sec id="s20004">
<title>Participants</title>
<p>In urban areas of Indonesia, including Jakarta, Bandung and Surabaya, 483 parent&#x2013;child dyads were sampled. The children were aged 9&#x2013;12 years (M = 10.7; standard deviation [SD] = 1.8; 52&#x0025; females). Most of the respondents were mothers (86&#x0025;), aged 28&#x2013;52 years (M = 38.4, SD = 6.2), and 74&#x0025; had at least a secondary school diploma. Almost all families (98&#x0025;) reported using smartphones every day, and 92&#x0025; stated that their children used social media platforms (TikTok, Instagram and YouTube Shorts).</p>
<p>Recruitment was conducted across public and private primary schools using stratified random sampling to ensure representation across socioeconomic strata (low, middle and high) and geographic zones (central and suburban). Within each stratum, schools were randomly selected, and parent&#x2013;child dyads were invited through school-parent meetings until the target sample size was met. Written informed consent was obtained from parents, and age-appropriate verbal assent was secured from children. The study protocol was approved by the Institutional Ethics Committee (&#x2018;information redacted to maintain the integrity of the review process&#x2019;).</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20005">
<title>Measures</title>
<p>The measured constructs were assessed using parent-reported questionnaires in Bahasa Indonesia, administered during school-parent meetings. Questions were answered using a 5-point Likert scale (<italic>1 = Strongly disagree</italic> and/or <italic>Never</italic> to <italic>5 = Strongly agree</italic> and/or <italic>Always</italic>). The tool was developed following a multi-process validation:</p>

<list-item><p>Modification of tasks based on existing foreign scales (e.g. Kurt <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0026">2023</xref>; Prime et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0033">2020</xref>).</p></list-item>

<p><xref ref-type="table" rid="T0001">Table 1</xref> presents the definitions, sample items and reliability estimates of the constructs.</p>

<title>Analytical strategy</title>
<p>We employed partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) using SmartPLS 4 (Hair &#x0026; Alamer <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0017">2022</xref>) for three methodological reasons: (1) its predictive orientation is optimal for testing novel moderated mediation models in under-researched contexts; (2) it efficiently handles complex interaction terms and reflective constructs without strict distributional assumptions; and (3) it provides robust estimates of path coefficients even when sample size is moderate relative to model complexity:</p>
<list list-type="bullet">
<list-item><p>PLS-SEM can handle non-normally distributed data and smaller samples.</p></list-item>
<list-item><p>Its predictive orientation makes it particularly suitable for testing a novel moderated mediation model in an under-researched context.</p></list-item>
<list-item><p>It is efficient in reflective constructs and their effects on interaction with each other (Hair &#x0026; Alamer <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0017">2022</xref>).</p></list-item>
</list>
<p>Child age and gender were initially tested as covariates in the structural model. Neither variable significantly altered the primary path coefficients (&#x0394;&#x03B2; &#x003C; 0.03, <italic>p</italic> &#x003E; 0.10). To preserve model parsimony and align with PLS-SEM guidelines for theory-driven structural testing (Hair &#x0026; Alamer <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0017">2022</xref>), they were excluded from the final reported model.</p>
<sec id="s30007">
<title>Stage 1: Evaluation of the measurement model</title>
<p>We evaluated:</p>

<list-item><p>Outer loadings (threshold &#x003E; 0.70).</p></list-item>
<list-item><p>Internal consistency through composite reliability (CR = 0.80).</p></list-item>
<list-item><p>The average variance extracted (AVE &#x003E; 0.50) was used to assess convergent validity.</p></list-item>
<list-item><p>Discriminant validity was determined (Heterotrait-Monotrait HETMT) ratio below 0.85.</p></list-item>

</sec>
<sec id="s30008">
<title>Stage 2: Structural model testing</title>
<p>We specified:</p>

<p>Interaction terms were created using a two-stage approach (Henseler, Ringle &#x0026; Sarstedt <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0020">2015</xref>). The fit of the models was measured by the standardised root mean square residual (SRMR) (&#x003C; 0.08 = good fit). Bias-corrected bootstrapping (5,000 resamples; 95 per cent confidence) was used to test hypotheses. BCa confidence intervals. All variables were standardised prior to analysis. Data that were missing (&#x003C; 2&#x0025;) were replaced with means, in line with best practices for PLS-SEM.</p>

<title>Ethical considerations</title>
<p>Ethical clearance to conduct the study was obtained fromthe Ethics Committee of Universitas Kristen Indonesia Tomohon, Indonesia (protocol number 99/LPPM-UKIT/VI/2025), and the study was conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki. Written informed consent was obtained from all parents, and verbal assent was provided by all child participants prior to data collection. All participants were informed of their right to withdraw from the study at any time without penalty, and their data remained anonymised throughout the analysis process.</p>
</sec>
</sec>
<sec id="s0010">
<title>Results</title>
<sec id="s20011">
<title>Sample characteristics and preliminary analyses</title>
<p>The final analytic sample comprised 483 parent&#x2013;child dyads. Children averaged 10.7 years (SD = 1.8), with a nearly balanced gender distribution (52&#x0025; female, 48&#x0025; male). Most respondents were mothers (86&#x0025;), aged 28&#x2013;52 years (M = 38.4, SD = 6.2), and 74&#x0025; had completed upper-secondary education or higher. Smartphone access was nearly universal (98&#x0025;), and 92&#x0025; of parents reported their child&#x2019;s active use of social media platforms. Univariate normality was acceptable (skewness: &#x2013;0.14 to 0.11; kurtosis: &#x2013;0.05 to 0.49). Harman&#x2019;s single-factor test yielded 28.3&#x0025; variance, indicating no severe common method bias. Construct descriptives are presented in <xref ref-type="table" rid="T0002">Table 2</xref>.</p>

<title>Measurement model assessment (outer model)</title>
<sec id="s30013">
<title>Reliability and convergent validity</title>
<p>The measurement model exhibited excellent psychometric properties. All outer loadings were above 0.845, exceeding the 0.70 threshold. Cronbach&#x2019;s alpha (0.917 to 0.956) and CR (0.917 to 0.967) were above the recommended levels (0.70 and 0.80, respectively). The AVE values ranged between 0.802 and 0.892, which are far greater than the 0.50 mark. The variance inflation factor (VIF) values were not greater than 5.0, as shown in <xref ref-type="table" rid="T0003">Table 3</xref>.</p>

<title>Discriminant validity</title>
<p>The heterotrait-monotrait (HTMT) ratio was used to confirm discriminant validity. All pairwise HTMT values were less than 0.65, which is below the conservative threshold of 0.85. The Fornell-Larcker criterion was also met: The square root of each AVE was greater than any cross-construct correlation.</p>
</sec>
</sec>
<sec id="s20015">
<title>Structural model assessment (inner model)</title>
<p>Given the cross-sectional design, all reported paths reflect statistical associations rather than causal effects. Directionality is interpreted within theoretical constraints and should be validated through longitudinal designs. The inner model and hypothesis testing results are presented in <xref ref-type="table" rid="T0004">Table 4</xref>.</p>

<title>Direct effects and hypothesis testing</title>
<p>The fit of the structural model was outstanding (SRMR = 0.036), and the explanatory power was high: R<sup>2</sup> = 0.705 for DSR and R<sup>2</sup> = 0.767 for CPW, both of which can be considered substantial (Hair et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0018">2022</xref>). Predictive relevance was authenticated through Q<sup>2</sup> &#x003E; 0 for both endogenous constructs (DSR = 0.421; CPW = 0.512).</p>
<p>All direct paths were significant. Digital self-regulation was positively predicted by DPP (0.182, 5.26, <italic>p</italic> &#x003C; 0.001), supporting H1. H2 was also supported when FEC was used to predict DSR, with a positive effect of 0.101, a <italic>t</italic>-value of 3.65 and a <italic>p</italic>-value of less than 0.001. Most importantly, DSR was a strong predictor of CPW (<italic>&#x03B2;</italic> = 0.443, <italic>t</italic> = 10.96, <italic>p</italic> &#x003C; 0.001), supporting H3 and demonstrating that DSR is a core mechanism in this model.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s30017">
<title>Effect size and predictive relevance</title>
<p>A close negative relationship was found between SME and CPW (<italic>r</italic> = &#x2212;0.693, f<sup>2</sup> = 0.938, large). Q<sup>2</sup> &#x003E; 0 was used to confirm the predictive relevance of both the DSR (0.312) and CPW (0.401). The f<sup>2</sup> DSR &#x2192; CPW was 0.406 (significant), and the others were between 0.011 and 0.034 (weak, but significant). The Q<sup>2</sup> values verified the extrapolative and predictive powers.</p>
</sec>
</sec>
<sec id="s20018">
<title>Moderation effects</title>
<p>The significance of all hypothesised interactions was assessed. The three hypothesised interaction effects were statistically significant, supporting the moderating effect of authoritative PS on family-level inputs to children&#x2019;s DSR pathways. The moderation effects are summarised in <xref ref-type="table" rid="T0005">Table 5</xref>. The correlation between PS and DPP was positively associated with DSR (<italic>&#x03B2;</italic> = 0.115, <italic>t</italic> = 3.26, <italic>p</italic> = 0.001), supporting H4a. Similarly, communication between PS and FEC had an even greater positive impact on DSR (<italic>&#x03B2;</italic> = 0.163, <italic>t</italic> = 5.12, <italic>p</italic> &#x003C; 0.001), proving H4b. These results imply that the beneficial effect of both digital PSs and emotional communication on the self-regulatory capacity in children is greatly enhanced in situations where the parents are authoritative in their PS, that is, they are warm, reasoning clearly and supporting their children by a sense of autonomy, thus establishing a conducive relational climate where guidance is embraced instead of being defended against.</p>

<p>Conversely, PS and SME showed a significant negative correlation with DSR (<italic>&#x03B2;</italic> = &#x2212;0.112, <italic>t</italic> = 3.42, <italic>p</italic> = 0.001), which is consistent with H5. This poses a percentage-determined boundary condition on negative moderation: even the most favourable PS can only partially buffer the regulatory pressure of high-intensity social media use. In an environment with high SME, the effect of authoritative parenting on DSR is significantly reduced, a generally protective effect. Together, the effects of these interactions prove that family agency exists within structural limitations, and the effectiveness of digital parenting depends not only on parental affection and communication levels but also on the severity of children&#x2019;s exposure to the digital world.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20019">
<title>Moderated mediation analysis</title>
<p>The impact of family inputs depended entirely on the DSR of well-being:</p>

<p>The two confidence intervals did not contain zero, indicating significant complete mediation. Parenting style had a significant moderated mediation index (DPP path: <italic>&#x03B2;</italic> = 0.051, <italic>p</italic> = 0.002; FEC path: <italic>&#x03B2;</italic> = 0.043, <italic>p</italic> = 0.001). The moderated mediation results are presented in <xref ref-type="table" rid="T0006">Table 6</xref>. The final synthesis of all tested hypotheses is presented in <xref ref-type="table" rid="T0007">Table 7</xref>.</p>

<title>Hypothesis testing summary</title>
<sec id="s30021">
<title>Summary of quality criteria</title>
<p>The structural model exhibited a perfect overall fit with a strong predictive strength, as shown in the summary (<xref ref-type="table" rid="T0008">Table 8</xref>). The SRMR value of 0.036 is far below the required value of 0.08 (Hu &#x0026; Bentler <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">1999</xref>), indicating that the model-implied correlation matrices are pretty close to the empirical correlation matrices. The model has explained a significant amount of variance in both endogenous constructs: 70.5&#x0025; in DSR and 76.7&#x0025; in CPW. The authors note that an R<sup>2</sup> above 0.75 is considered very high, and even slightly lower (DSR) is an outstanding level of explanation in social science research (Hair et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0018">2022</xref>).</p>

<p>The blindfold analysis confirmed that the two Q<sup>2</sup> values recorded, 0.312 (DSR) and 0.401 (CPW), were greater than zero, indicating the model&#x2019;s predictive ability outside the sample (Hair et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0018">2022</xref>).</p>
<p>The issue of multicollinearity did not arise, as the most significant VIF of 4.84 (obtained with DPP3) was below the commonly accepted PLS-SEM threshold of 5.0. This large VIF is indicative of the model&#x2019;s strong explanatory power (since R2 exceeds 0.70) rather than pathological collinearity.</p>
<p>Collectively, the established psychometric properties and structural fit confirm that the model meets rigorous methodological standards. These quality criteria substantiate that the estimated pathways are statistically reliable and theoretically coherent, providing a sound foundation for the subsequent discussion.</p>
<p>As a unit, the aforementioned quality measures fit, explanatory power, predictive relevance and validity substantiate that the model is statistically sufficient, theoretically significant and methodologically robust.</p>
</sec>
</sec>
</sec>
<sec id="s0022">
<title>Discussion</title>
<sec id="s20023">
<title>Key findings in dialogue with prior research</title>
<p>The findings of this research relate to and augment extant studies on digital parenting, child welfare and self-regulation in the digital environment. Our findings also emphasise the importance of FEC in mitigating the psychosocial risks of SME among children. On the same note, similar observations were made in European settings, where teenagers do not readily share the risks of the Internet with their parents (Lisztwan Honusov&#x00E1; et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0028">2026</xref>). This implies that the family&#x2019;s protective role in communication might be universal, but it is mediated by culture. The findings are relevant to applied developmental studies because they show how daily digital parenting and FEC correlate with children&#x2019;s DSR and psychosocial well-being in an urban setting in Southeast Asia. We discuss each of the main findings below in a direct conversation with prior empirical and theoretical findings, highlighting areas of consistency, differences and new insights.</p>
<sec id="s30024">
<title>Digital self-regulation as the core mediator</title>
<p>When we found that DSR completely mediates the relationship between family inputs and psychosocial well-being, we aligned with the theoretical developmental implications that position self-regulation as a scaffolded proficiency triggered by responsive caregiving (Thompson <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0043">2014</xref>; Vasiou et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0046">2023</xref>). This supports the report by Rega et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0037">2023</xref>), who found that DSR was a significant predictor of mental health among adolescents in Belgium and by Zhang (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0048">2023</xref>), who reported similar pathways among Chinese adolescents (Rega et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0037">2023</xref>; Zhang <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0048">2023</xref>). However, our research builds on this by illustrating this mechanism in middle childhood (9&#x2013;12 years), a developmental period that is underrepresented in the digital regulation literature. Although most previous research has focused on adolescents who have already developed autonomy, our results reveal that even during the early adolescent period, the family emotional climate and PS influence children&#x2019;s regulatory capacity (Lavri&#x010D; &#x0026; Naterer <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0027">2020</xref>).</p>
<p>From an educational standpoint, the centrality of DSR suggests that children&#x2019;s capacity to manage online stressors and screen time boundaries transfers directly to classroom self-regulation, peer conflict resolution and sustained attention during digital learning tasks. When these capacities are scaffolded at home through emotionally responsive communication, teachers report fewer behavioural disruptions and higher socioemotional readiness, highlighting the need for school-family alignment in digital habit formation.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s30025">
<title>The distinct roles of digital parenting practices and family emotional communication</title>
<p>Digital parenting practices and FEC were both positively related to DSR, but DPP exerted a stronger direct effect (0.182 vs. 0.101). This appears to support the work of Syukur et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0042">2024</xref>), who found that active mediation and rule-setting are reliable predictors of digital well-being in 12 countries (Syukur et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0042">2024</xref>). Nonetheless, our conclusion that FEC plays an important role alongside DPP aligns with techno-managerial paradigms that favour rules over relational discourse (Adawiah &#x0026; Rachmawati <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0001">2021</xref>). This is congruent with Gunarti, Meilanie and Marjo (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0016">2023</xref>) and Ratliff et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0036">2023</xref>), who postulate that emotional openness to online stressors, in particular, creates emotion socialisation capacity that forms the foundation of regulation resilience (Gunarti et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0016">2023</xref>; Ratliff et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0036">2023</xref>). Our findings indicate that explicit emotional communication is an adaptation strategy to a specific situation that is highly responsible in collectivist communal environments in Southeast Asia, a phenomenon that Western-biased frameworks have failed to capture in depth (Jung &#x0026; Choi <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0022">2020</xref>; Shaw et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0040">2020</xref>; Zhang et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0047">2024</xref>).</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s30026">
<title>Authoritative parenting as an amplifier</title>
<p>The cross-cultural support for the strong positive moderation of authoritative parenting (PS) provides evidence that warmth, structure and autonomy support may help internalise regulatory norms (Hamid et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0019">2025</xref>; Kapoor et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0024">2024</xref>). We find that our results are similar to those of Vasiou et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0046">2023</xref>) in European settings and generalise them to the Indonesian setting, proving that authoritative climate is not only a background factor but also a background-boosting one (Vasiou et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0046">2023</xref>). More importantly, the fact that the interaction between PS and FEC (<italic>&#x03B2;</italic> = 0.163) is stronger than that between PS and DPP (<italic>&#x03B2;</italic> = 0.115) indicates that emotional scaffolding is particularly effective when integrated into an autonomy-supportive environment. This phenomenon adds further insight into how PSs and specific family processes interrelate.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s30027">
<title>Social media exposure as a structural constraint</title>
<p>Most importantly, our results, which show that high SME nullifies the positive parenting protective effect (<italic>&#x03B2;</italic> = 0.112, <italic>p</italic> = 0.001), are inconsistent with findings from other researchers working in low-exposure environments. Indicatively, Jung and Choi (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0022">2020</xref>) found that authoritative parenting completely mitigated the risk of digital exposure among Korean youth, even with moderate screen time (Jung &#x0026; Choi <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0022">2020</xref>). In contrast, our data show that even the best parenting cannot ensure the scaffolding of self-regulation in high-exposure urban Indonesia, where children spend more than 2 h a day on data-mining-intensive platforms like TikTok. This is consistent with the structural critique proposed by Meier and Reinecke (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0031">2020</xref>), which holds that the intensiveness of platform design and algorithms overwhelms individual-level resources. This condition has rarely been studied in previous family studies (Meier &#x0026; Reinecke <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0031">2020</xref>). Therefore, we bridged family systems theory and media systems theory, showing that family agency depends on the structural context.</p>
<p>The attenuating effect of high SME on family-guided regulation has direct implications for school-based digital literacy initiatives. When algorithmic intensity exceeds home-based scaffolding, schools become a critical secondary environment for reinforcing emotional dialogue, critical media consumption and self-monitoring strategies. Integrating relational digital guidance into homeroom routines and parent&#x2013;teacher meetings can help bridge the regulatory gap created by platform-saturated environments.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s30028">
<title>Substantial explanatory power in a non-Western context</title>
<p>The very high R<sup>2</sup> values (0.705 for DSR and 0.767 for CPW) exceed what would be considered reasonable in the Western literature (e.g. R<sup>2</sup> = 0.3050 in Rega et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0037">2023</xref>). This indicates that family processes can exert a greater influence on child outcomes in fast-digitalising collectivist societies such as Indonesia than on peer or institutional influences in saturated Western media ecologies, where competition among them is more intense. This aligns with the recommendation of Syukur et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0042">2024</xref>) to develop context-specific models that address cultural and infrastructural differences in the effectiveness of digital parenting (Syukur et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0042">2024</xref>).</p>
<p>Overall, our results confirm the theoretical underpinnings of the leading mechanisms in the literature and demonstrate key contextual constraints, particularly the structural constraints of family agency in high SME, thereby shifting universalist models towards a more ecologically situated conceptualisation of digital parenting in the Global South.</p>
</sec>
</sec>
<sec id="s20029">
<title>Theoretical contribution: Challenging Western hegemony and proposing a Global South model</title>
<p>These results not only demonstrate the pivotal role of DSR as a mediating factor but also subvert the individualistic tenets that Western theories of DSR often hypothesise. In studies conducted in Europe and North America, DSR is generally conceptualised as embedded in children&#x2019;s executive functioning (Rega et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0037">2023</xref>; Zhang <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0048">2023</xref>). Conversely, in the Indonesian collectivist background, DSR is a relational rather than an individual accomplishment, developed through FEC.</p>
<p>This realisation necessitates redefining Self-Determination Theory (SDT) to foster the development of digital ecosystems in the Global South. Conventionally, SDT assumes that autonomy is an individual achievement. However, our data indicate that healthy autonomy in Indonesia is shaped by relational interdependence: children manage their digital behaviour because they are emotionally attached to their parents, not despite this attachment. We suggest this as an interdependent autonomy, a new theoretical construct that will make a fresh contribution to developmental and digital media research in the future.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20030">
<title>Practical implications: Contextual and actionable programmed design</title>
<p>The real-world application of these findings aligns with Indonesia&#x2019;s Penguatan Pendidikan Karakter (PPK; Character Education Strengthening) programme, a nationally implemented, school-based character initiative delivered through teacher-facilitated parent workshops and integrated into primary school extracurricular schedules. While participation is voluntary, PPK is widely adopted across public and private schools and trained by certified regional education coordinators. We propose embedding a &#x2018;Digital Emotional Dialogue&#x2019; module within PPK, comprising eight guided sessions that coach parents in asking reflective, emotion-focused questions about children&#x2019;s online experiences (e.g. &#x2018;What part of that video made you feel upset or happy?&#x2019;). A preliminary feasibility pilot in three Jakarta primary schools (N = 68 dyads) indicated a 32&#x0025; increase in children&#x2019;s willingness to discuss digital stressors with parents over 6 weeks. The digital emotional dialogue will capitalise on collectivist values of relational harmony, shifting family digital practices from surveillance to co-regulation.</p>
<sec id="s30031">
<title>Policy recommendations and school-based digital initiatives</title>
<p>The attenuating effect of high SME underscores the need for policy-level coordination between family welfare agencies and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. Rather than treating digital literacy as a standalone technical skill, schools should integrate relational digital guidance into homeroom curricula and structured parent engagement programmes. Teachers can be trained to facilitate brief digital emotional check-ins that mirror the family communication strategies validated in this study, helping children articulate online experiences in a supervised classroom setting. Quarterly parent&#x2013;child digital literacy workshops, co-facilitated by schools and local digital literacy networks, can align home and classroom expectations around screen boundaries, critical content evaluation and emotional self-monitoring. These collaborative approaches complement Indonesia&#x2019;s Gerakan Nasional Literasi Digital (National Digital Literacy Movement) while addressing the socioemotional realities of digitally saturated primary classrooms. Platform-level interventions could further support this ecosystem. For example, automated weekly prompts (e.g. &#x2018;Discuss: What was your child fond of doing on [platform] today?&#x2019;) could be embedded into parental dashboard notifications, enabling caregivers to act as emotional guides rather than surveillance agents. Such features align with Government Regulation No. 17/2025 on electronic systems for child protection and require intersectoral cooperation between tech platforms, education ministries and community health networks.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s30032">
<title>A global alternative: A decolonial model for the majority world</title>
<p>Finally, this study offers a Global South alternative to mainstream Western digital parenting frameworks, which often prioritise individual autonomy and restrictive monitoring over relational co-regulation. While Western models of knowledge treat children as independent actors, our model treats the family as a unit of control. The digital well-being of children in this paradigm is not achieved by reducing screen time or its duration but by collectively sharing and emotionally responsive meaning-making around digital experiences.</p>
<p>This will offer us a decolonial outlook on digital literacy, which ought to be reflected in the policies of international organisations such as United Nations Children&#x2019;s Fund (UNICEF) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Furthermore, it is highly relevant to other developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, where collectivist cultures prevail, and to the negotiation of children&#x2019;s digital lives in high-speed technological environments, which pose issues similar to those in India.</p>
</sec>
</sec>
<sec id="s20033">
<title>Limitations and future research directions</title>
<p>This study has several limitations. Firstly, the nature of cross-sectional research excludes causal inferences; longitudinal research must be conducted to determine temporal precedence. Secondly, self-report measures can introduce common method bias; multi-informant methodologies would enhance validity. Thirdly, the urban Java sample does not allow generalisation of the results to rural Indonesian settings or other collectivist cultures. Fourthly, other moderators (e.g., socioeconomic status and peer influences) are unmeasured and warrant further investigation to understand their relation to well-being outcomes across domains. Despite these shortcomings, the current study provides strong evidence supporting the use of family-centred digital parenting interventions among collectivists.</p>
<p>Despite these limitations, the current study provides robust evidence that relational digital parenting and FEC are central to children&#x2019;s DSR and psychosocial adjustment in collectivist, rapidly digitalising contexts. School-family collaborative interventions that prioritise emotional dialogue over restrictive monitoring warrant further longitudinal and multi-informant testing.</p>
</sec>
</sec>
<sec id="s0034">
<title>Conclusion</title>
<p>As evidenced by this study, the psychosocial well-being of children in digitally saturated urban environments is shaped less by screen duration and more by the quality of family emotional interactions that scaffold DSR. Through PLS-SEM analysis of 483 parent&#x2013;child dyads, we confirmed that DSR fully mediates the association between DPP, FEC and child well-being. Importantly, the strength of these family processes is amplified by authoritative parenting but attenuated by high SME, illustrating the structural limits of home-based agency in algorithm-driven media ecologies. For childhood education, these findings underscore the necessity of positioning schools as active partners in digital emotional socialisation. Pedagogical frameworks in collectivist settings should prioritise emotionally sensitive communication and relational autonomy over technical surveillance. By integrating family-centred digital guidance into primary school curricula and teacher&#x2013;parent collaboration structures, educators and caregivers can jointly cultivate the self-regulatory capacities that underpin both socioemotional resilience and sustained classroom engagement.</p>
